Pogostemon helferi ('Downoi'): grower data and care
A compact foreground plant with curly leaves, found by Thai aquarists near the Thailand–Myanmar border and rated medium on difficulty, light and CO2 by Tropica [1, 2]. Tropica's article says it thrives between 23 and 30 °C and grows without CO2, only more slowly [2].

What the grower data says
Tropica rates Pogostemon helferi medium on difficulty, light, CO2 and growth, with a height of 3–10 cm or more [1]. Aquasabi gives the same medium ratings and lists CO2 as required, with a care height of 1–10 cm [3].
Tropica’s longer article, by Ole Pedersen, is more relaxed about both inputs. It says the plant is not particularly light-demanding and that CO2 enrichment always stimulates growth but “is not really required”; without it the plant simply grows more slowly [2]. It is one of the few plant pages that publishes a temperature range: the article says it thrives from 23 to 30 °C [2].
Light sets the shape
The article is precise about light. Under less light the plant grows taller, up to 15 cm; intense light gives compact shoots no longer than 5–8 cm, the form most people want [2]. That is why the article calls it among the easiest foreground plants Tropica has: at low light the stems just get longer and the plant looks less compact, rather than failing [2].
Planting
Tropica grows it emersed, which the article says keeps the plants free from algae and helps them adapt to different tank water [2]. To plant, divide the cluster of plantlets into four or five blocks and set them 3–5 cm apart; remove loose or aging leaves and large lumps of root first, because that tissue will die and decay and slow the plants’ establishment [2]. With good light and a nutrient-rich substrate, side shoots form small roots and the plant spreads into a carpet [1].
Aquasabi lists it for the foreground, middle ground and nano tanks, and as an epiphyte [3].
Feeding and trimming
The article notes that the plant grows relatively fast and needs added nutrients, and that iron deficiency sometimes appears as yellowish new leaves, corrected with a liquid micronutrient fertilizer at the recommended dose [2]. When growth is lush, trim by removing whole shoots so that light and nutrients reach the shoots that remain [2]. See iron and chelates for why iron needs a chelate to stay available.
Names and range
The name ‘Downoi’ comes from Thailand, where the plant is called “dao noi”, little star; Tropica credits two Thai aquarists with finding it on the border between Thailand and Myanmar [2]. Tropica’s article describes its habitat as the amphibious vegetation along creeks and small rivers, submerged in the wet season and emersed in the dry season [2].
Pogostemon helferi (Hook.f.) Press is accepted in the World Checklist of Vascular Plants, in the mint family Lamiaceae; Hooker first described it as Dysophylla helferi [4]. Its native range is India, the eastern Himalaya, Myanmar and Thailand [4, 5], consistent with the article’s account.
Questions
What does 'Downoi' mean?
Tropica says the plant is called 'dao noi' in Thailand, meaning little star [2].
Why are the new leaves yellow?
Tropica's article says iron deficiency sometimes occurs and shows as yellowish new leaves, treatable with a liquid micronutrient fertilizer at the recommended dose [2].
